The deposits were formed thousands of years ago when ancient seas intruded inland and gradually evaporated, leaving behind natural salt deposits. As the continents moved through tectonic activity, the rocks surrounding the seabed were lifted by pressure on the tectonic plates, creating a mountain range. This mountain range is now known as the Himalayas, where crystalline salt rocks are mined from areas near the mountain, providing the popular pink salt.
This rock salt is famous for its pink hue, which is due to the minerals present in the underground deposits from which it is mined. Trace elements of calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper and iron play an important role in the characteristic color of Himalayan salt. Pink Himalayan Salt also has a slightly sweet aftertaste, due to the presence of iron oxide.
